Vintages hats from Quebec!

When I was 13, my Mom bought a hat store and decided she was going
to earn our living making hats. She did sew for us, but never for others.
How she was going to make hats an d sell them was a mystery for me.
So we moved in a big house with high ceilings, gorgeous wood paneling and stairs
on the main street of Montmagny, a small city east of Quebec.

Every week she went to Quebec City and came back with boxes of supplies,
buckram, grosgrain ribbon, wire, glue, felt, rolls of beautiful imported straw.
Wooden mold, and also an electric mold. She also brought back some magazines.

She  would go thru those magazines  and sure enough she could make the hats, decide what accessories she was going to offer ect.
She was an artist, and for 6 years she made  & sold hundreds of handmade
hats. She also tough it was a great way to earn money if you needed some!
One summer, I had to take a millenery course. Was I mad my friends were going to the beach, to the movies ect. I got to spend my time with "Old Ladies" learning
how to make hats, use the buckram, build a base, cut on bias to make a rim,

Well the summer went by, I tough it was over. You can guess she had a motive
and I tough she will not let me try and make hats with the supplies if i goof
it will be money gone. I was in for a big surprise. She brought down from the attic
some boxes of old unsold hats ( they would be worth good money today)
said take the flowers fruits & ribbons off and we will use those hats
for you to practice.
We did, and of course she helped and I really at the time tought I did it myself :)
We  sold many for good prices and I was so proud.

You can see  at the top of this page 2 examples of vintage felt hats. from loukiesworld.com  and  some on Ebay.

Vintage hats are so stylish, they add the vintage  touch to your look, in the 60's
you would never have dreamed of going to church without a hat & gloves.

Have a great week I hope you enjoyed my story.
